Dog Training NZ – Pat Oliver has been working with dogs for approx 30 years. Pat is very passionate about dogs living a healthy, happy life, with the dog being allowed to be what he is – a dog. I love to bring out the best in dogs through understanding what each individual dog is gifted at doing, e.g. tracking, obedience trials, hunting, etc.
Pat is a certified dog trainer, gaining my qualifications through Multi-National K9 in Brisbane, Australia, in April 1993. There was no such certification in Dog Training NZ so I had to go to Australia. I have also trained an obedience champion, plus taking dogs through to companion dogs with excellence.
As Dog Training NZ, Pat is able to train for obedience, tracking, protection and guard work, hunting and searching, etc. Pat specializes in helping dog owners understand their dog and how to make their dog happy just through plain simple common sense that does not come automatically just because we own a dog. Every dog is different and so is every person, so I do my best to bring about a happy relationship for owner and dog.
Pat loves working with problematic situations such as dog biting and the reasons behind the cause, many of which surprises a number of dog owners. A lot of the answers are very simple, that is because the dog is not a complex animal, even if we would like to think it is.
Pat has also written a booklet for a number of our councils to give to new dog owners to help give these people an understanding of the dog. I wrote this booklet eight years ago due to the fact that there were a number of very serious dog bites showing up on television. I was very upset at what I saw and knew I needed to let people know the truth about why these bites were taking place. I have trained many people over the years and many dogs have been turned around to happy normal dogs. This is has come about through owners being able to make simple changes in the home environment. This booklet has proved very popular with our councils (dog control) and New Zealand Kennel Club so I was asked to do another edition which I have just recently completed.
Pat has also written a book called “Practical Tips for Puppy/Dog Owners”. The book is written in very plain simple English language so that the ordinary person, who may not necessarily be an avid reader, but is well able to understand it. I have refrained from using flowery language and kept the subjects short. The feedback I have received is very positive indeed. People have told me they were so grateful for a book that was written in plain simple language and they didn’t have to wade through a lot of jargon just to get to the point. I have tested the reading of this book out with children age 9-10 years and they understand it very well, so much so that I would like to get copies into all schools. The stuff written in this book has come about through much gleaning over many years, and I believe this knowledge should be passed on to future generations.
